as did St. Therese of Liseux the Little Flower. Still another thing we can do, would be to encourage men and women, possibly ourselves, to respond generously to God's Call to serve in the Missions as His priest or religious, or to give three years of our lives to serve in the Missions as a Lay Mission Helper.
In addition, because everything cost so much these days, we can help fulfill this Command by giving generously of our funds for this work. Not just today in the Mission Collection, but on a frequent, regular basis.
Let us today and everyday develop and possess a genuine love and concern for the spread of the Gospel to all people everywhere!
For those who are tithing, this is a very worthwhile charity with which to share a part of the second 5% of our Tithe unto the Lord!

FEAST OF ST. JUDE THIS SATURDAY
This Saturday, October 28th, is the Feast of our Parish Patron, St. Jude Thaddeus, Apostle and Martyr.
St. Jude is referred to as "Judas, son of James" (Luke 6:16, Acts 1:13), and is also said to be a close relative of Jesus (Matthew 13:55, Mark 6:3). At times, St. Jude is referred to simply as "Thaddeus" (Matthew 10:3, Mark 3:18). At the Last Supper, it was St. Jude who asked the Lord why He had manifested Himself only to His disciples and not to the whole world (John 14:22). In the Epistle of St Jude, he simply refers to himself as: "Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ and the brother of James." (Jude 1:1).
According to Eastern Catholic Tradition, St. Jude went off to preach the Gospel to Mesopotamia and Persia ("Eastern Menology" by St. Basil). St. Jude and St. Simon, also an Apostle, were presumably martyred the same day in Persia.
St. Jude was beaten to death by a club, and so is usually represented holding a club, the instrument of his martyrdom. Also, a boat or an anchor are often used with him, as he was a fisherman in the Sea of Galilee.
Mention is made of his grandsons by Hegesuppius, that they were tried and acquitted under Domitian (Emperor 81-96), and that they ruled the Christian communities of Palestine while Trajan was Emperor (Emperor 98-117) as written in "Historia Ecclesiastica" by St. Eusebius, 3:20.1-5.
Masses this Saturday will be at 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. The Novena Prayers will be recited after those Masses. Veneration of our Relic of St. Jude the Apostle will follow.

NOTE FROM FR. BILL ST. JUDE NOVENA PRAYERS
I would like to bring something to our parishioner's attention and to ask your help. For many, many years people have been leaving Chain Letter Novenas to St. Jude and others in churches almost everywhere. These kinds of prayers represent very poor theology. In fact, Blessed Pope Pius IX condemned these Chain Letter Novena more than a 140 years ago. Such types of prayer do not represent our relationship with God our Father. As Blessed Pius IX stated, such letters are superstitious and blasphemous.
The one I am looking at, which I picked-up in church today, starts-out by saying that this novena prayer must be said six times each day for nine consecutive days & the person must leave nine copies in the church each day. It goes on to say that if you do this, your prayer will be answered.
That is not how God answers prayers! This assumes these prayers are an act of magic. Say these prayers, leave the prescribed copies in church each day, and presto --- you have your request! This is vending machine spirituality! It is absolutely NOT Catholic Christian spirituality! It does not focus on the Wisdom or the Love of God the Father or our own willingness to live-out His Will for us. It makes our relationship to Him less than human, and it makes His response to us very disinterested and lacking in any real love or concern. Nor does it leave God the Father any room, in His Wisdom, to give us what is really the best for us. That is not a very good or a very loving God Who would do that.
One of the Chain Letter Novenas actually said if you break this chain, something terrible will happen. Happily such a letter as only appeared on rare occasions. A priest friend once told me of one person who was so upset by this that she came to the rectory begging to photocopy the required number of copies because she feared this terrible thing would happen to her. What a shameful way to portray God! That is blasphemous, as Blessed Pope Pius IX stated regarding these chain letters. If you see one of these photocopies in church, please do not pay any attention to it or take part in it. In fact, you would doing us all a favor if you would tear it up and toss it in a trash container. I would encourage you and ask you to throw it in the garbage. That is where it belongs.
Our God is a Loving God Who wants nothing but good for us. He is wise and knows better than we do what we need and He responds to our needs in love.
