LENTEN FRIDAYS ARE DAYS OF ABSTINENCE
All Fridays of Lent are Days of Abstinence: Abstinence means not eating meat from any warm-bloodied animal. It obliges all who are 14 years of age and over. Persons whose health would be seriously effected by not eating meat are dispensed; but they should do some other form of penance. Personal dispensations for other reasons can be obtained from the Pastor or from your Confessor for a good reason, but anyone doing this must do some other form of penance.

US CENSUS
One and all are encouraged to fully participate in the current United States Census. It is a matter of record that the 1990 Census was grossly undercounted. As a result, California lost out on millions of tax dollars for roads and other federal projects and funding. We also lost much needed funding to use for the underprivileged living here in our State.
Please return your questionnaire as soon as possible, even if you got a long form.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT
The Fourth Sunday of Lent marks the mid-point of this Great Season. It has the Latin name: "Laetare" [in English "Rejoice"] Sunday. As a symbol of it being the mid-point of Lent, Rose vestments are worn; another mid-point: between purple and white.
Lenten Year "B" Readings: This week the Readings stress our need for repentance and forgiveness. While God had remained faithful to His Promises, we have not always been faithful to our Baptismal Promises. The first Reading from the Second Chronicles shows that sin always has painful consequences. That Reading also reminds us that God's wrath is accompanied by His mercy. The second Reading from St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians tells of God's greatest act of mercy, the Salvific Passion, Death, Resurrection, Ascension and Glorification of Christ Jesus. The Gospel Reading reminds us that it was out of love that God sent His Only-Begotten Son, Jesus, to save us. We are asked to respond to God's gracious Gift of His Son by removing the darkness of sin from our lives so as to do the works of the light.
Lenten Year "A" Readings: For those attending a Second Scrutiny Mass today, the Readings come from Year "A". These Readings today focus on the symbol of light. With Christ as our Light, we are able to see aright, as God sees into the heart in the First Book Of Samuel. In Baptism, we share in the divine life and so are called to live in the light "which produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth" (Ephesians 5:9). What is more, we are called to examine our lives in the light of Christ and root out all that is sinful.
The Second Scrutiny celebrated today touches on the Jubilee Themes of Evangelization and the Power of God extending throughout the world.
For those attending the Second Scrutiny Mass today, this Scrutiny focuses on the need for removing all obstacles from seeing the truth.

HELP OUR GIRL SCOUTS HELP "MANNA"
St. Jude's Girl Scouts are leading our parish community in helping the local Conejo Valley "Manna" Program, which helps the local poor. Needed are food items, personal hygiene items, and necessary household items. Please do NOT donate anything in a glass container, as "Manna" can be sued if it breaks.
Food items being sought at this time are: canned juices and soups, canned veggies and fruits, canned meals and meats, dry soup mixes and meal mixes, and dry cereals.
Other basic food items being sought in small non-breakable containers are mayonnaise, mustard, catsup, salt & pepper, sugar, flour, cooking oil, tea & coffee.
Personal hygiene items needed are: bath soap, combs, brushes, shaving lather and shavers, toothbrushes and toothpaste, deodorant, and hair shampoo and gel.
Other hygiene items are: washing soap and bleach, disposable baby diapers, baby bottles, and items for bathing and caring for a baby.
Please leave your donations in the back of the church in the big red buckets when you come to Mass. The Girl Scouts will collect them and take them to "Manna".
