THE COMMUNION PROCESSION & STANDING AT MASS
Whenever Monsignor Tommy O'Connell attended Masses at St. John's Seminary or at parishes already implementing the directives regarding Standing and the Communion Procession, his last years he would often struggle trying to stand. Yet, stand he would, even though the rubric in the Sacramentary states that "those unable to stand, may sit".
So that we truly form community when receiving the Sacrament of Holy Communion, the rubric in the Sacramentary directs that the Gathered Assembly stand from the "Our Father" till all have received Holy Communion. [For those who wish the precise directive, it states that the Assembly stand from the words "Mysterium Fidei" till all have received. That is, from immediately after the Words of Institution. However, the American Bishops asked for and obtained from the Holy See, permission to kneel till the "Our Father".]
The reason behind the continued standing by the Assembly, is that the Gathered Assembly is one with Christ and one with each other in Christ. As one body, all doing the same thing, we stand together while singing together the Communion Hymn of praise unto the Lord. Only after all have received, do we then sit together to spend some time in quiet meditation and prayer with the Eucharistic Lord within us. His Holiness, Pope John Paul II, often spends up to 15 minutes in quiet, meditative prayer with His Eucharistic Lord, before he concludes his Mass.
On the First Sunday of Lent, March 12th, we will begin standing from the "Our Father" till all have received Holy Communion. Again, those who cannot stand, are allowed to sit as the rubric in the Sacramentary directs.
