ST. JUDE CATHOLIC COMMUNITY    PAGE SEVEN   JANUARY 16, 2000

THE JUBILEE HOLY YEAR INDULGENCE

An Indulgence is "the remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins, already forgiven through the Sacrament of Penance".    The conditions for gaining the Jubilee Holy Year Indulgence are:

a worthy Sacramental Confession,
leading to a genuine conversion of heart.
a worthy Reception of Holy Communion,
a Pilgrimage
to recall that the whole of Christian life
is like a great pilgrimage to the house of
of our Father.
praying for our Holy Father, by saying:
the Creed, an Our Father,
a Hail Mary, and a Glory Be.
visiting a Pilgrimage Church,
designated by our Holy Father
or our Local Bishop.
making charitable works,
by making the care for the sick,
for those in prison,
for the elderly or abandoned children,
for young people in trouble,
and all who are in need,
a part of daily living.

HOLY YEAR DOOR IN YOUR HOME
To Remind You to Open the Doors of your Hearts to Christ?

Pope John Paul II has issued a Call and a Challenge that each  individual
"Open Wide the Doors to Christ" --- the doors of our hearts and minds and souls.    We can accomplish this only by reconciling with ourselves;  by reconciling with family members with whom we live;  by reconciling with those at work or school with whom we spend a lot of time;  by reconciling and forgiving anyone who has offended or hurt us;  and by reconciling with any we have hurt or offended.      We have put up a banner on the Main Interior Doors of our church reminding us to be about the work of reconciling, healing and forgiving during 2000

YOUR JUBILEE DOOR

We as Catholic Christians have been encouraged by our Holy Father to mark "a" door in our homes, schools, parishes, and even our offices with a Door Hanger stating "Open Wide the Doors to Christ."      There are packets in our Parish Pastoral Office for making a Jubilee Door in your home.

JUBILEE PILGRIMAGE CHURCHES

On December 24th, 1999, His Holiness, Pope John Paul II, opened the "Holy Year Door" in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.    At that moment, the Millennium Jubilee Holy Year began.    One of the ways to gain the Jubilee Indulgence is by visiting the holy shrines in the Holy Land or visiting the major Basilicas in Rome, or one of the churches designated by our Cardinal Archbishop.     The pilgrim must pray
:

  1. for forgiveness for his/her sins,
  2. for the grace to be truly reconciled to God and all those      he/she has hurt or offended in anyway,
  3. for the intentions of the Holy Father;
  4. and the pilgrim must also receive the Sacraments of Penance
and Holy Communion within eight days of making this pilgrimage.

Local churches in the Santa Barbara Region designated as Holy Year Pilgrimage Churches are:

  Mission San Buenaventura
211 E. Main Street, Ventura
  Blessed Junipero Serra
5205 Upland Road, Camarillo.

Each parish has been asked to make a "Pilgrimage together" after seeking God's healing mercy and reconciliation.    Individuals can also seek these graces on their own after they have tried their best to choose life, have forgiven all who have hurt them, and have sought to be reconciled with God and neighbor.

Parish Pilgrimage to local Pilgrimage Church

Our parish community, St. Jude's, will make a Formal Community of Faith Pilgrimage after spending this coming Lenten Season seeking reconciling healing from God, family and neighbor.    We will offer a bus for those wishing to go as a community of faith.    Others may go by car.    Full details will be in the Bulletin.

SLEEPING BAGS & BLANKETS STILL ARE NEEDED

Dolores Mission in East Los Angeles still has a real need for sleeping bags and blankets.   In fact, it is a Desperate Need!

If you can help, please bring your donations to the Parish Pastoral Office.    Louise Brennan will make sure these items get to Dolores Mission as soon as possible.

CARE-GIVERS
"Respite & Renewal"

"Respite & Renewal" is a wonderful program designed to offer Care-Givers support.

We all become a Care-Giver at some time during our lives.    When we become a parent of an emotionally and/or physically disabled child;    or we have elderly parents or relatives to care for;   or we are involved in many bereavement or detention or other ministries that drain us even as we serve.   From time to time we need a
"Respite"  and we need to be "Renewed".

This group meets every other Sunday afternoon in Rooms 3 & 4 of the Parish Hall from 1:15 to 3:00 p.m.     Next gathering is today.     No dues!     No fees!     Just sharing and support and love.
