THE JUBILEE HOLY YEAR INDULGENCE
An Indulgence is the remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins, already forgiven through the Sacrament of Penance. This Jubilee Holy Year is a year to gain such forgiveness and mercy from God. The conditions for gaining the Jubilee Holy Year Indulgence are:
a worthy Sacramental Confession,
leading to a genuine conversion of heart.
a worthy Reception of Holy Communion,
as this Jubilee Holy Year must be intensely Eucharistic.
a Pilgrimage
to recall that "The whole of Christian life is like a great pilgrimage to the house of of our Father."
praying for our Holy Father,
by saying for the Holy Father's Intentions: the Creed, an Our Father, a Hail Mary, and a Glory Be.
visiting a Pilgrimage Church,
designated by the Holy Father or the Local Bishop.
making charitable works,
by making the care for the sick, for those in prison, for the elderly or abandoned children, for young people in trouble, and all who are in need, a part of daily living, because Christ is in each one of them. (Matthew 25:34-46).
JUBILEE PILGRIMAGE CHURCHES
December 24th, 1999, His Holiness, Pope John Paul II, opened the "Holy Year Door" in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. At that moment, the Millennium Jubilee Holy Year began.
One of the graces during each Holy Year, is the ability to gain a Full Plenary Indulgence for the remission of all temporal punishment due to our sins. One of the ways to gain this Indulgence is by visiting the holy shrines in the Holy Land and/or visiting the major Basilicas in Rome. During these visits, the pilgrim must pray:
for forgiveness for his/her sins, for the grace to be truly reconciled to God and all those he/she has hurt or offended in anyway, for the intentions of the Holy Father; the pilgrim must also
visit a designated pilgrimage church, and must receive the Sacraments of Penance and Holy Communion within eight days of making this pilgrimage.
Since many people cannot visit these far off places, the Holy Father has asked each Local Bishop to name certain Holy Year Pilgrimage Churches in his local diocese. His Eminence, Roger Michael Cardinal Mahony, as our Archbishop, has named the following local churches in the Santa Barbara Region as Holy Year Pilgrimage Churches. Mission San Buenaventura 211 E. Main Street, Ventura Blessed Junipero Serra 5205 Upland Road, Camarillo. Each parish has been asked to make a "Pilgrimage together" after seeking God's healing mercy and reconciliation. Individuals can also seek these graces on their own after they have tried their best to choose life, have forgiven all who have hurt them, and have sought to be reconciled with God and neighbor.
